NM's Quantum Moonshot one of four invited to $160M proposal round
The New Mexico Quantum Moonshot, a collaborative initiative between national laboratories, universities and private sector entities, has been invited as one of only four groups nationwide to submit a full proposal to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines program, according to a news release.
The full scale of this opportunity is more than $500 million if the collaborative group is successful, according to Alex Greenberg, economic development advisor for the New Mexico Governor’s Office.
Quantum Advancement
Octave Photonics, Mesa Quantum Awarded $500,000 Grants by OEDIT
Elevate consortium members Octave Photonics and Mesa Quantum were each awarded with $500,000 grants through the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) Advanced Industries Accelerator Program. These grants help promote the growth and sustainability of advanced industries in Colorado by driving innovation, commercialization, and public-private partnerships that move this vital aspect of Colorado’s economy forward in communities across the state.
Quantum Impact
GeekWire: Microsoft and Atom Computing leap ahead on the quantum frontier with logical qubits
Microsoft and Atom Computing say they’ve reached a new milestone in their effort to build fault-tolerant quantum computers that can show an advantage over classical computers.
Microsoft says it will start delivering the computers’ quantum capabilities to customers by the end of 2025, with availability via the Azure cloud service as well as through on-premises hardware.
“Together, we are co-designing and building what we believe will be the world’s most powerful quantum machine,” Jason Zander, executive vice president at Microsoft, said in a LinkedIn posting.
Quantum Nation
Vescent Named “Entrepreneur of the Year”
Vescent has been awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation! Receiving this honor, along with a congressional commendation from U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen, is a celebration of our commitment to pushing boundaries and transforming ideas into impactful technologies.
Congrats to Vescent on the award!
Quantum Camps
Sandia Announced 2025 QCamp Dates
The strangeness of quantum physics is being harnessed to revolutionize computing as we know it. At QCaMP, you will get a primer on the fundamentals of computing, learn hands-on the oftentimes perplexing phenomena of quantum physics, and apply those phenomena to solve computing problems in new ways.
Participants will gain experience creating circuits on a real-world quantum computer and gain access to resources to bring quantum concepts into the classroom. The only prerequisites for this camp are basic algebra and an interest in learning more!
Applications open on Feb. 1, 2025.
Quantum Chats
"The Bear Roars" with Consortium CEOs Corban Tillemann-Dick, Ian Dickinson
Elevate Quantum Board Member Dan Caruso sits down with Corban Tillemann-Dick, Founder and CEO of Maybell Quantum, and Ian Dickinson, President and CEO of Longpath Technologies on the latest episodes of The Bear Roars Podcast. Listen and learn from two of Colorado’s quantum leaders!
Quantum Updates
Coming In December
EDA Activities
Implementation work is underway! We’ve sent out a major RFP to request consulting support for this critical implementation phase, and we’ll be making that decision over the coming weeks. In parallel, we are finalizing timelines for the administrative building, the lab, and the fab at the Quantum Commons in Arvada. Finally, we will be attending an important workshop in Washington, D.C., called the Road Map Summit, which convenes all NSF Engines and Tech Hubs. This will be a great opportunity to learn from other hub ecosystems across the country.
Governance and Consortium Engagement
We are organizing several meetings with our advisory boards in the lead-up to our January board meeting. Most notably, we will be meeting with the EQ Workforce Collaborative, both with its board and as a whole consortium. There are exciting potential activities we can already undertake to maximize the impact of this initiative.
NSF Engines Proposal
We’ve made good headway, particularly around the technology-focused Grand Challenges, following a convening in New Mexico two weeks ago with many consortium members and potential new ecosystem partners. There are also strong developments for the capacity-building and economic development activities that we believe this effort can help catalyze. Thank you to everyone pitching in to support this initiative—another huge opportunity for our regional quantum ecosystem!
