WSJ: New Mexico Wants To Be The Heart of Quantum Computing

Feature1

New Mexico, home to some of the nation’s top defense research facilities, is placing a bet on a different area of national security: quantum computing.

The state has formed a coalition of organizations, including the governor’s office, local universities and the U.S. Department of Defense, to turn the region into a hotbed of innovation for quantum computing in national security.

The Wall Street Journal took a look into how New Mexico and Elevate Quantum are helping make the state the heart of quantum computing.

Quantum Impact

Colorado School of Mines Developing a Quantum Research Lab Inside a Literal Mine

Feature3

Colorado School of Mines is known for both cutting-edge research and its historical roots supporting Colorado’s mining industry. Now these two worlds are coming together in a new way.

Mines is developing a quantum research facility inside the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs to serve as a testbed for experiments that will push the boundaries of fundamental science and support quantum technology commercialization by industry.

Quantum World

New Boulder Atomic Clock Submitted to Track World’s Time

Feature4

For people all over the globe, one area where time is monitored is by an atomic clock housed in the National Institute of Standards and Technology lab in Boulder.

According to scientists at NIST in Boulder, their newest atomic clock, the NIST-F4, will help track time more precisely and help put global time on a more accurate frequency.

Scientists believe in the ability of the F4 so much that they have submitted it to the International Bureau of Weights and Measures to be used as a primary frequency standard that would oversee the world’s time.

July 25: DARPA to Hold Pitch Day in Aurora for $400K in Potential Funding

Feature2

DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) will host an invitation-only, in-person Pitch Day on July 25, 2025. It will be held in conjunction with MTO Spark Tank in Aurora, Colo.

MTO Pitch Day is an opportunity for selected participants to pitch revolutionary concepts directly to MTO program managers for potential funding of up to $400,000 for short-term exploratory efforts. Awardees will be announced the same day that they are pitched.

This initiative aims to fast-track transformative ideas that could evolve into future DARPA programs. MTO is looking for revolutionary – not evolutionary – research ideas that align with the following technical areas of interest:

  • Unconventional Computing: Exploring new paradigms beyond traditional digital computing, with the potential to improve speed, energy efficiency, and processing capabilities

  • Biologically Inspired Microsystems: Developing electronic microsystems that integrate biomolecules and leverage biological principles for superior sensing and computation capabilities

  • Commercially Catalyzed Defense Deployment: Leveraging commercial-scale technologies to enhance national security and create a self-sustaining ecosystem for accelerating defense-specific microsystem deployment.
